Online Government Documents

Oakton Community College Library is one of the nation’s nearly 1,250 designated libraries in the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) with government information. Oakton Community College Library has participated in FDLP since 1976.  The FDLP was established by Congress in 1813 to ensure the American public’s access to its Government’s information.

Due to space constraints, Oakton found it necessary to cut its FDLP collection significantly in 2012. Even in consideration of the 5 years’ retention rule, Oakton’s collection of over 600 titles in tangible format remained overwhelming for our limited space. When FDLP initiated the “All Online Depository Library Option” in November 2014, Oakton, being a smaller depository library, found this prospect appealing. After choosing to implement this option, the library is now able to retain its FDLP selections by replacing most of these titles in tangible format with catalog accessible titles in electronic format. By doing this, Oakton Community College Library is now able to make more efficient use of its space without sacrificing the depository services to our patrons.
