Student Book Club

During the first meeting of the Student Book Club, Ready Player One by Ernest Cline was discussed. Everyone in attendance loved the book. We discussed the author’s bio, the Easter egg contest the author hid in the book (the prize given was a DeLorean), the book, and the future movie. We talked about the dystopian setting, online relationships, indentured servitude, and some of the pop culture references. It was a great discussion!

Our next meeting is Wednesday, December 7th, 4 – 5 p.m..
We will be meeting in the lower level of Oakton’s library in Des Plaines.

We will be discussing:

9780765370624_p0_v3_s192x300Ender’s Game
by Orson Scott Card

“Once again, the Earth is under attack. Alien ‘buggers’ are poised for a final assault. The survival of the human species depends on a military genius who can defeat the buggers. But who? Ender Wiggin. Brilliant. Ruthless. Cunning. A tactical and strategic master. And a child.

Recruited for military training by the world government, Ender’s childhood ends the moment he enters his new home: Battleschool. Among the elite recruits Ender proves himself to be a genius among geniuses. In simulated war games he excels. But is the pressure and loneliness taking its toll on Ender? Simulations are one thing. How will Ender perform in real combat conditions?

After all, Battleschool is just a game. Right?” (description from back cover).

Where to get the book:

  • We will have a new copy available soon at the DP library (it is being cataloged now).
  • There are at least 40 copies available to borrow through ILL in Ishare in either hardcover or paperback. You can request the book be sent to either campus.
  • Otherwise, this book is available at most public libraries as well as in Overdrive and 3M (public library apps).

Why not come and join the discussion? If you have any questions, contact Gretchen Schneider.
