Celebrate Earth Day at Oakton on April 22nd!

Earth Day is celebrated globally in order to raise public awareness about environmental concerns and to educate the public on what they can do to help the environment.

book cover for Hell on EarthHell on Earth: The Wildfire Pandemic
by David L. Porter with Lee Reeder

“The world is burning, and it appears that we are to blame. Conditions that create large-scale fire disasters are occurring more frequently every year, spurred on by global warming. And the potential for damage, loss of life, and greater harm to the environment is staggering.

As devastating fires increase throughout the western and southern United States, the number of fires in the Brazilian rain forest continues to increase as well. Vast areas of the wilderness are dying throughout the West, setting the stage for a human and environmental tragedy.

David L. Porter has been covering wild fires in the west for more than twelve years. After losing his home to a wildfire in 2003, he set out to find how and why this was happening, not only in the western US, but around the world. Hell on Earth chronicles the origins of these catastrophes as well as the effects they are having on our planet” (Descriptive content provided by Syndetics).

book cover for EarthEarth: The Operators’ Manual
by Richard B. Alley

“Since the discovery of fire, humans have been energy users and always will be. And this is a good thing—our mastery of energy is what separates us from the rest of the animal kingdom and has allowed us to be the dominant species on the planet. However, this mastery comes with a price: we are changing our environment in a profoundly negative way by heating it up.

Using one engaging story after another, coupled with accessible scientific facts, world authority Richard B. Alley explores the fascinating history of energy use by humans over the centuries, gives a doubt-destroying proof that already-high levels of carbon dioxide are causing damaging global warming, and surveys the alternative energy options that are available to exploit right now. These new energy sources might well be the engines for economic growth in the twenty-first century” (Descriptive content provided by Syndetics).

book cover for High Tide on Main StreetHigh Tide on Main Street: Rising Sea Level and the Coming Coastal Crisis
by John Englander

“Rising sea level is the most profound long-term aspect of climate change. Yet, the public is almost completely unaware of the magnitude of the problem. For three million years sea level regularly moved up and down almost 400 feet with the ice age cycles. Now, after 6,000 years of minimal change, we are entering a new era of rapid sea level rise.

In clear, easy-to-understand language, this book explains: science behind sea level rise, plus the myths and partial truths used to confuse the issue.; surprising forces that will cause sea level to rise for 1,000 years, as well as the possibility of catastrophic rise this century; the devastating economic effects will not be limited to the coasts; coastal property values will go underwater long before the land does, perhaps as early as this decade; and five points of ‘intelligent adaptation’ that can help individuals, businesses, and communities protect investments now and in the future.” (Descriptive content provided by Syndetics).

book cover for Early Childhood Activities for a Greener EarthEarly Childhood Activities for a Greener Earth
by Patty Born Selly

“As many early childhood professionals make efforts to improve the environmental health and safety of their setting, they also want to educate children about the impact and value of these greener choices. Early Childhood Activities for a Greener Earth helps teachers connect environmental issues with their daily curriculum in a sensitive, developmentally appropriate manner.

This resource includes background information on environmental topics including waste reduction and recycling, improving air quality, weather and climate change, and energy and toxicity reduction and one hundred lessons and activities that will excite children, engage families, and encourage communities to be green” (Descriptive content provided by Syndetics).

DVD cover for Food, Inc.Food, Inc.

This DVD video “Lifts the veil on our nation’s food industry, exposing how our nation’s food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profits ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. Reveals surprising—and often shocking—truths about what we eat, how it’s produced and who we have become as a nation.”
